Proxy Server Setup

Truman faculty, students and staff can access the Pickler Memorial Library databases and other Truman web-based network resources when not on the Truman campus (for example;  while at home) by using the Truman Proxy Server.

When you use the Truman proxy server your Internet access will be slightly slower than normal.  This is due to your Internet traffic flowing through the proxy server rather than directly between your computer and the Internet.  For this reason, we recommend you only use the Truman proxy server when actually connecting to the restricted resources.

These instructions are for use by Truman faculty, students and staff when using an off-campus computer for Internet access. It may be possible to configure a networked system at a non-Truman location to use the Truman proxy server but this is not recommended unless you contact the IT Service Center at the non-Truman site for assistance.

The off-campus computer system must be running the following software (or newer versions):

Windows Vista, 7, or 8; with Internet Explorer 7  and up or Mozilla Firefox  2 and up
    -OR-
Macintosh OS X; with Internet Explorer 7 and up, Safari 3 and up, or Mozilla Firefox

Earlier versions of operating systems and/or browsers may not work with the Truman proxy server.

To use the Truman proxy server, the off-campus computer should be configured as follows: 

   On a Windows system with Internet Explorer
  1. Click on Start, Settings, Control Panel
  2. Open Internet Options (a window will appear titled Internet Properties)
  3. Click on the Connections tab
  4. Single click  the button marked LAN Settings.
  5. A window will appear titled Internet Settings, put a check in “use a proxy server”
  6. In the address box enter:  proxy.truman.edu and then click on OK
  7. In the Internet Properties window, click on OK
  8. Close Control Panel, close Internet Explorer (if open) and you’re done.
    Note:  If you're currently connected with a modem, disconnect and re-dial.
  9. The next time you start Internet Explorer it will use the Truman proxy server.
    At the proxy authentication prompt, enter your Truman network ID and password.
   On a Windows system with Mozilla Firefox
  1. Open Firefox browser and under the Tools header select Options.
  2. Click the Advanced tab.
  3. Select Network tab in Advanced section tab.
  4. Click on the button marked Settings and a new connection settings window should pop up.
  5. In the connections settings window select the option marked Automatic proxy configuration URL
  6. In the address box below enter:  proxy.truman.edu and then click on OK.
  7. In the Options window, click on OK
  8. Close Mozilla Firefox to register these new settings.
  9. The next time you start Mozilla Firefox it will use the Truman proxy server.
    At the proxy authentication prompt, enter your Truman network ID and password.

   On a Macintosh (OS X up to 10.4) with Internet Explorer or Safari

  1. From the Apple Menu, choose System Preferences
  2. Click on Network
  3. Make sure your proper network connection is selected next to the word Show, then click on the Proxies tab.
  4. If necessary, click the lock in the bottom left-hand corner and enter your password.
  5. Check the box for Web Proxy (HTTP) and enter proxy.truman.edu in the blank to the right.
  6. Click Apply Now.
  7. If your web browser is running, you will have to quit it and start again. When you try to access a website, you will be prompted to enter your username and password.
   On a Macintosh (OS X 10.5) with Safari
  1. From the Apple Menu, choose System Preferences
  2. Click on Network
  3. Make sure your proper network connection is selected on the left
  4. Click the Advanced… button, then click on the Proxies tab
  5. Select Manually from the "Configure Proxies" drop down
  6. Check the box for Web Proxy (HTTP) and enter proxy.truman.edu in the blank to the right.
  7. Click OK
  8. If your web browser is running, you will have to quit it and start again.
    When you try to access a website, you will be prompted to enter your username and password.

On a Macintosh System with Firefox
  1. Open Firefox browser and under the Firefox menu select Preferences.
  2. Click the Advanced tab.
  3. Select Network tab in Advanced section tab.
  4. Click on the button marked Settings and a new connection settings window should pop up.
  5. In the connections settings window select the option marked Automatic proxy configuration URL
  6. I the address box below enter:  proxy.truman.edu and then click on OK.
  7. In the Options window, click on OK
  8. Close Mozilla Firefox to register these new settings.
