Connect to group web with a Mac

There are number of ways clients should be able to access group webspace – and fortunately that inlcudes connecting via a Mac without having a network share! Should be especially easy if clients are already Dreamweaver users.

About the only "gotcha" when working on a Mac client is that none of them support "Windows Integrated Authentication" which is the highly secure authentication method we use on the trumannt and student domains to access most resources. The authentication method on the client’s website will have to be set to use "basic authentication". This is the same security used when ftp-ing to Gold now – it’s not horrible – but it’s not Fort Knox! The Macintosh folks continue to work to address this and we here at Truman stand ready to test and try any option that might work well.

That said, there are several products with built-in support to connect to webspace via http (sometimes called webDAV or webfolders) (I’ll reference mostly high-end Adobe and Macromedia products here)

Adobe
GoLive, Photoshop and Illustrator are all webDAV enabled clients – meaning they can connect to a resource via its URL — AND provided you have an authorized username and password – you not only can read files, but you can edit and write files to the location as well.

GoLive info:

Macromedia
Dreamweaver is also webDAV enabled.

On both the PC side and Mac side, Dreamweaver 4.0 requires a free patch from the Macromedia site for a webDAV connection to work properly. http://www.macromedia.com/support/dreamweaver/releasenotes/4/releasenotes_4.htm#402

Some additional Macromedia support information about webDAV and Dreamweaver: http://dynamic.macromedia.com/bin/MM/exchange/extension_detail.jsp?extOid=251895

Here is a great "how to" – http://www.unt.edu/webinfo/tutor/dreamweaver/dw_webdav.htm (a suggestion – if you make a "local mirror" site to work from – make it on a zip disk unless you plan to work from a non-public computer)

Stand-Alone products (these set up a "web folder" or a resource on your desktop which functions somewhat like a network drive)

and others – see http://www.webdav.org

This information should get most clients connected. I hope to have all of this available on a webservices website by end of summer.
