03/07/2003 | The problem appears to have been resolved. On Wednesday afternoon, March 5, MOREnet changed the QoS (quality of service) for our Internet connection. Since then our Internet access has been back to normal. _________________________________ We are experiencing an intermittent problem with slow Internet access. We are working with MOREnet on finding and fixing the problem. Analysis has not revealed any problem on our local network. The Internet performance problem began Tuesday morning (2-19), vanished Friday morning (2-21) before 8 AM but returned on Monday morning (2-24). This problem also seems to affect Library access to Lance. A new network monitor point was installed Tuesday morning (2-25) to provide better trace information. Several sniffer traces were sent to MOREnet for analysis. The traces show a Internet performance problem. A computer has been set up in a DMZ completely past all Truman network equipment, it connects directly to the MOREnet router. This computer is experiencing similar problems with Internet performance. |

01/29/2003 | Between 1:00PM and 9:00PM on Sunday, January 26, the Truman network experienced several intermittent outages - the cause of which is still being determined. |
01/28/2003 | The network outage from midnight Friday night until around 9:00am on Saturday morning (1/25/2003) was due to the new SQL worm that is infecting systems across the Internet. Most universities connected to MOREnet were affected by this outage. Even though all the critical servers on campus were patched for this type of worm - there were 2 PC's that were hit. These 2 systems caused local network access to be extremely slow. These machines have been disconnected from the network. All local services were restored by 9:10am.
The follow was received from MOREnet regarding the outages: A new worm known as the SQL Slammer Worm was discovered on January 24, 2003. This worm targets servers running Microsoft SQL and causes a denial of service and loss of network availability. In order to restore network availability, MOREnet has temporarily stopped routing all port 1434 udp traffic across the backbone. While this may cause some interruption of SQL use, many MOREnet networks were simply unavailable on the morning of Saturday, January 25, 2003 due to traffic from this worm. Normal routing will be restored as soon as the threat has abated.
Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP running SQL
Any Internet device or user attacked or abused from a compromised machine. Significant reports of loss of network availability (both inside and outside MOREnet) have come to MOREnet’s attention.
