Date Description
08/25/2003 Partial network and Internet access has been restored. The number of infected MSBlaster machines on campus took a huge jump over the weekend. A large number of systems also have the Welchia worm. Both of these virus worms cause severe network problems. Almost all of the infected systems are located in the student Residence Halls. Due to the severe impact on the campus network the followinging buildings have been temporially removed from the campus network: Missouri Hall, Centennial Hall, Dobson Hall and Ryle Hall. We have identified the student systems infected with MSBlaster or Welchia and are working with students to clean their computer systems. We will try to restore full network access to all buildings as soon as possible.
08/22/2003 Analysis has discovered a second level of the SoBig worm virus attack scheduled to take place at 2 PM today. For detailed info see: http://www.f-secure.com/news/items/news_2003082200.shtml and http://view.exacttarget.com/?j=156572&l=23386_HTML&e=shelwig@collegis.com . Access to the 20 servers identified in this 2nd outbreak has been blocked at the University Internet Firewall.
08/22/2003 Users infected with the W32.Sobig.F virus are putting a large amount of traffic on the Truman email systems. This is resulting in significant delays and problems for people trying to access their email. We are working to resolve this issue as soon as possible.
UPDATE: We have taken steps to decrease the impact of the SoBig.f virus but as a result some of the backed up emails will slowly arrive in an unpredictable manner. Barring any new threats we hope the worst of the email problems have been solved and by tomorrow emails should begin arriving in a timely manner. We would also like to remind everyone to make sure their home computers have an updated virus protection and proper security patches. Thanks to all for your patience and understanding through this double whammy of MSBlaster and SoBig.f.
08/21/2003 Campus Pipeline has been unavailable since approximately 11:00 pm on Tuesday August 19. The cause of the problem is not yet known, IT Services is working with Campus Pipeline support to resolve the issue.
UPDATE: The issue has been resolved at 9:00 am Wednesday, August 20. Campus Pipeline is back online.
08/22/2003 UPDATE MCAFEE ANTI-VIRUS! To guard against the email spam virus that hit campus today, make sure your McAfee Anti-virus software is up to date. To see if you have the latest Anti-Virus software, right click on the Vshield in the bottom right portion of your screen. Click on "About VirusScan Enterprise". Look at the Virus Definitions line. If your VirusScan software is up to date, it will read 4287. If you are below 4287, you can easily update your Anti-Virus software. You may do this by restarting your computer, or by manually updating the McAfee Anti-virus software.

If you need assistance, call the Help Desk x4544.

08/21/2003 Home users infected with the MSBlaster worm are severely impacting the dial up system. We're tracing and contacting all infected dial-up users but 100% resolution is expected to take quite awhlie to accomplish.
08/17/2003 The upgrade of Pipeline from version 3.1 to 3.2 has been completed and the system is operational. There are still a few minor adjustments but these will not affect the overall operation. 08/14/2003 Because of the continuing threat and problems associated with the MSBlaster worm, we have been forced to take the dial in modem pool or terminal server down for a security upgrade and reconfiguration. We will be bringing the service back on line at 5:00pm for after hours use. HOWEVER, it may be necessary to take the service back off line for a short time tomorrow for further configuration.
We would urge all dial up users to ensure that they have updated virus protection and the proper patches applied to their computer.

Therefore we will be taking the Pipeline system down tomorrow night, Thursday the 24th at approximately 6pm for an indefinite amount of time. We hope to have it back up by the following morning but due to the very complex configuration of the Campus Pipeline system, it is possible that the restoration process could take an extended period of time.
