Date Description
01/31/2004 There were problems with email processing from early Saturday morning until ~ 3:30 PM Saturday afternoon due to a hardware problem with a server.
01/30/2004 The terminal server (dial-up access) was rebooted today at approximately 11:10, Thursday 1/29, due to system problems caused by a connection from a Blaster-worm infected computer. Steps are being taken to isolate the infected computer and prevent continued problems.
01/27/2004 In order to clear an application error, the administrative web server Argon was rebooted at approximately 5:30. All services were restored within 5 minutes.
01/28/2004 Campus Pipeline is currently unavailable. IT Services and SCT/Campus Pipeline support are investigating the cause of the problem. More information will be posted as it is available.

UPDATE: Campus Pipeline is now back online. After the outage this morning, we have installed a service pack on the Pipeline webserver, which will hopefully fix the problem.

01/30/2004 On Jan 26, a new computer virus was found. The virus (W32/Mydoom@MM) is a mass-mailing worm and McAfee has classified the virus 'High-Outbreak'. Refer to http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_100983.htm for more information. McAfee released a new DAT file 4319 last night and with ePO managing the campus systems, 1400 systems have already been updated. The front end email routing server is protecting the campus from any incoming emails with the latest virus.
You can verify that your system is up to date by following these steps: right-click on the 'V' shield icon in the bottom right corner of your screen and select 'About VirusScan Enterprise..', the latest 'Virus Definitions' should be 4319 (they are usually updated weekly) and then click 'OK'. If the definition is not 4319, right-click the 'V' shield icon and select 'Update Now'.
01/26/2004 Internet access suddenly slowed down at 3 PM today. It has largely returned to normal as of 3:45 PM. We have a ticket open with MOREnet on this incident. The preliminary investigation showed a very large inbound data stream was being directed at our network from an external location. We are continuing to investigate.
01/21/2004 There was a problem this afternoon with slow Internet access from 12:45 - 2 PM. The problem was caused by several machines on campus generating millions of UDP packets. The problem machines have been disconnected from the campus network.
01/16/2004 There was a short email sending problem this morning with sendmail. It was restarted at 7:40 AM and email sending is back up. We're investigating and working with the vendor to identify the cause of the sendmail failure.
01/15/2004 There was a brief email problem this morning. The problem was traced down and corrective action taken by ~ 8:40 AM. We are still investigating what was responsible for causing this mornings email problem.
01/14/2004 All email queues have been processed. All email systems are now working normally. There are no known email problems at this time.
01/14/2004 Due to the large volume of email that was queued during the recent Campus Pipeline student email problem email access may be slow for awhile. There are currently over 27,000 email messages queued on the email router. The email router is delivering messages and the queue is going down but it will take some time to completely catch up. We are continuing to monitor the email systems to ensure they are working properly.
01/14/2004 ** Updated 8:30 AM ** Campus Pipeline services have been restored. Student email is back up. The Campus Pipeline server crashed early Tuesday morning. We have been working with the vendor non-stop since then to correct the problem. The cause of the failure is still being investigated but it was software based. There were no hardware problems with the server.
01/04/2004 Truman Dial-up service is currently unavailable. Troubleshooting continues at this time. An update will be posted as soon as service is available.
--
Update 2:15pm 01/02/04 -- Truman Dial-up service has been restored. The problem was due to a service failure on the server which handles authentication for the dial-up system.
12/23/2003 The Truman Home page is displaying with an error. The cause is currently under investigation and a fix will be in place ASAP. All other navigation on the Truman Home Page is functional - only the news items and quick links at the bottom of the page are unavailable.
--
Update: The problem with the news items on the Truman Home Page has been resolved. During the current University holiday, there happened to be only one news item posted on Pipeline - a situation which had not occured till now. This situation revealed a flaw in the code used to pull those news items into the home page. The code has been rewritten to accomodate the proper news item count.
12/17/2003 Campus Pipeline was running slow beginning approximately 10:30 a.m. It appears that Campus Pipeline was not properly releasing the sessions when users logged out.
12/13/2003 We are currently experiencing an Internet connection problem of unknown origin. It is not a Truman network problem as the internal systems seem to be functioning properly. More information will be posted as it becomes available
UPDATE: The problem appeared to be a Domain Naming Service (DNS) issue where the internal servers have received bad information from the external DNS root machines. The problem has been corrected as of 11:00am.
12/10/2003 On Wednesday the 10th of December, ITS will be adding enhanced functionality to the email system. This new functionality will provide enhanced virus protection, security and performance. There should be no down time and users are not required to make any changes.

12/09/2003 Campus Pipeline had several outages this afternnon and evening due to a full hard drive. The problem should be resolved.
12/10/2003 The Administrative Web Server was down Monday morning from approximately 4:30 am to 7:45 am due to internal system error. The error has been cleared and all hosted websites are available.
12/04/2003 Network services have been restored to Campbell Apartments. A fiber card failed in a major backbone fiber distribution switch. Network services were down to Campbell Apartments from 12:20 AM until 11:10 AM.
11/24/2003 We are experiencing an intermittent problem with slow Internet access. Our network monitors show a slow response times between Truman and MOREnet. The MOREnet network monitors are also showing an intermittent problem with very slow responses from one of the MOREnet networks in Kansas City. Truman is connected to the MOREnet KC network. We have reported the problem to MOREnet technical support.
11/22/2003 Machines booting this morning were not receiving the default gateway information from the DHCP server. The value had to be reset on the DHCP server. A release and renew, or a reboot will correct the problem.
11/20/2003 Access to specific resources in the STUDENT Domain will be unavailable Thursday night from 10:00 - Midnight during the regularly scheduled Thursday night IT maintenance window. The following resource is expected to be unavailable during this time: STUDENT Domain S: drive which includes several network applications. Access to the following resources may also be affected intermittently during this maintenance window: STUDENT Domain profiles, U: drive which includes the Student Files Area, access to STUDENT Domain applications. The scheduled maintenance that is being performed is to apply vendor-provided software updates for SPSS which should correct problems that we have been experiencing with this application.
11/20/2003 Internet access will be temporarily unavailable Thursday night from 9:30-10:30 PM during the regularly scheduled Thursday night IT maintenance window due to work being performed on network equipment.
11/18/2003 We are experiencing very bad network latency between the local MoreNet router and the rest of the MoreNet system. This problem does seem to be intermittent. Contacted MoreNet, they are looking into the problem. MoreNet was able to observe the same problem from their end.
