Date Description
06/14/2004 All faculty and staff network Y drives have been moved to a new file server. For the majority of us the move will be invisible.

When you logon to a Windows based computer system a logon script automatically connects your network Y drive to the proper server. For non-Windows computer systems such as Linux and Macs, if you are connecting to your network Y drive you will need to update your connection definition to specify the new server TS7 rather than the old server TS1.

If you have any questions please contact the ITS HelpDesk at x4544.

05/07/2004 Some campus computers rebooted unexpectedly today at 3:00 PM. This was caused due to a temporary configuration change that had not yet been disabled. In order to help combat the spread of the SASSER worm, ITS had responded by configuring computers to install security updates at 3:00 PM (on Tuesday, May 4). This configuration change had not yet been disabled. Therefore, the computers that rebooted today were ones that had downloaded additional updates from Microsoft Windows Update. Since they had been configured to install Windows Automatic Updates at 3:00 PM, they rebooted when the installation was complete. Any users logged on should have received warnings (and a 5 minute countdown) before the reboot; however, some users have reported that a reboot occurred without any warning. ITS is changing Truman systems currently connected to the network so that this does not occur again.
05/05/2004 Campus Pipeline failed to start up following a scheduled reboot on the morning of 5/5/04. The system was unavailable from 4:30 a.m. - 5:20 a.m. All services have been restored.
05/04/2004 An emergency security patch update was applied to the Exchange server over the noon hour. This resulted in incoming email being briefly rejected. The problem has been corrected.
05/04/2004 The Microsoft Exchange email system will be briefly unavailable from 12:20 to 12:30 PM due to a system change.
05/03/2004 Several new computer viruses / worms have been released in the world recently. This afternoon one of them, the W32 Sasser Worm was detected on the Truman campus. There have been several reports of computer systems being affected by this worm. Please keep your operating system up-to-date with security patches and anti-virus protection. If you need help with your computer system please contact the ITS HelpDesk.
05/03/2004 Campus Pipeline was unavailable around 10:45 a.m. All services were restored by 11:00 a.m. The cause of this problem is being investigated by Campus Pipeline support.
04/30/2004 In order to enhance security, ITS is planning to perform several functions on computers tonight including installing necessary Windows Service Packs and Critical Updates. This is part of an overall plan to enhance desktop security.

ITS is requesting that all Windows-based Truman-owned computers be connected to the campus network and left powered up at the logon screen this evening (Thursday, April 29 2004).

04/30/2004 This morning we were hit with an outbreak of the W32/Bagle.aa@MM virus. This virus (which was just discovered today) spreads through email attachments. Like many viruses, it appears to be from someone you know. For more information, view http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_124875.htm. ITS is currently pushing out an update to protect against this virus. However, the best protection is always to exercise caution when reading email--never open any suspicous or unexpected attachments. Further action has also been taken to stop the spread of this virus at Truman as well as to locate and clean machines which are currently infected.
