Windows 11 Upgrade

Windows 11 Upgrade Plan for Truman

As of October 31, 2025, Microsoft will stop supporting Windows 10, no longer releasing security patches for this system.  Because of this, Windows 10 machines will no longer comply with Truman’s network use policy and will need to be removed from the network.  The current plan is to migrate all workstations to Windows 11 before the Fall 2025 semester.  The ITS Desktop Support Team has started deploying Windows 11 and so far has encountered very few problems.

From now until April 26 – Phase 1 of the upgrade is in progress now and is for the self-service early adopter.  This phase is for those willing to try to upgrade to Windows 11 using the instructions below, reviewing the FAQs if needed.  Depending on the age of your system, updates may take 30 -90 mins.  While you are installing the update you may continue to use your computer, but it will prompt you to reboot once the update has been installed.  For those interested in managing this change on your own, instructions on the Windows 11 upgrade can be found here.

April 26 – May 10 – Phase 2 of the process will involve automatically upgrading machines that are still running Windows 10.  If at all possible, the plan is to have all primary faculty/staff computers updated before May 10.  We will provide more specific details once we see how many computers remain after phase 1.

NOTE: some computers will NOT support Windows 11 due to age of the system and/or hardware requirements. If your device is over 7 years old it might not be able to be updated. ITS has identified these computers and this information has been shared with your department.

What to Expect

  • All systems must be upgraded to Windows 11 by October 31, 2025. After this date, Windows 10 systems will no longer be supported by Microsoft and should not be connected to our network.
  • The Windows 11 upgrade may require some systems to be replaced, and as a reminder, workstation replacements are the responsibility of the department.
  • Windows 11 has new security features, changes to the interface, and the start menu. If your system already has Windows 11 then nothing further needs to be done.
  • Windows 11 Projected Completion Date: October 17, 2025
