8/9/2007 Network W: Drive Changes for Academic Reorganization

August 9, 2007

Truman W: drives are a file storage area provided by a Truman file server that allows people in the same work group to store and share files. On Windows based computers a W: drive is automatically provided. Mac and Linux users may also use W: drives, but they have to manually connect.

Currently, academic W: drives are assigned to work groups based on Truman academic division. However, due to the Truman academic reorganization these academic divisions no longer exist. Network W: drive assignment (and their organizational structure) must be updated for the academic reorganization.

The weekend of August 11th new Banner codes will be activated for the academic reorganization. During this same weekend the network W: drives will be reorganized into a transitional structure. This transitional W: drive structure will allow everyone to continue to have access to all of the W: drive files they have today, but the change will also create new W: drives for the new colleges and departments. All files from the old division W: drives will be available to you during the transition period.

During the W: drive transition period all academic W: drives will be mapped to the respective College or School level. The old divisional W: drive data will be available to you as a sub folder of the College or School W: drive. The new department W: drive area will also be available to you as a sub folder. This will allow you to move data from the old divisional W: drive area to your new department W: drive area.

If any Deans or Department heads need additional security restrictions on any files or folders please contact ITS and we will work with you to address your needs. Please note, all requests for special security restrictions on W: drive folders need to be approved by the respective Dean or Department head.

The transition period for W: drives is scheduled for August 11th through January 6th 2008. During the W: drive transitional period you must move your W: drive data from the old division W: drive areas into the new college and department areas. On January 6th 2008 the old division W: drive areas will be removed.

ITS will make every effort to help make the required changes as smooth as possible. If you have any questions or require assistance on any IT related topic please remember we are here to help. Call x4544, email helpdesk@truman.edu, or come by the ITS HelpDesk so we can assist you.

Thank you.
8/9/2007 On Sunday, August 12, we will be updating the Banner student module to put into place coding consistent with the new academic structure. This update includes recoding all catalog courses, programs, recruit and applicant curriculums, student curriculums, and faculty home college and departments to the new college/school and department structure.

Many reports listing data by college, department, and major will not have to be changed since the data will continue to flow naturally in the new order. However, some reports handle specific college/department processing and these will need to be changed. Throughout this transition period, we are working to identify reports that need to be modified. If you are concerned about a specific report and whether or not it will continue to function correctly, please have your Division/Department office submit a request to have that report reviewed. Submit these requests to McClain Hall 107 and please include the report name and use this form: http://its.truman.edu/admincomputing/DataRequestFormAppendix10.pdf

If you have any questions or concerns about the coding updates to Banner, please contact Tammy Roberts at x4257 or troberts@truman.edu.

3/19/2007 ITS is improving the way you handle regular password changes. ITAC policy states that you must change the password on your University account every 6 months for security. Previously, everyone was required to change their password on the same day, called "Password Tuesday," twice a year.

To make the process more convenient for you, ITS is eliminating Password Tuesday. Instead, we will send email reminders beginning 30 days before the date you must change your password. You may change it anytime at your convenience, and your new password will be good for another 6 months.

If you have any questions about password policy, please call the ITS
Help Desk at x4544.

2/22/2007 In 2005, the United States government passed the Energy Policy Act of 2005, which changes the start and end dates for Daylight Saving Time (DST) in spring 2007.

This may impact your Outlook Calendar appointments between March 11 and April 1. Microsoft is furiously scrambling to patch its products to properly handle these changes. ITS currently has no assurances to how smoothly this will happen. There is a possibility your appointments in this time period will shift an hour from when you recorded them.

To protect your sanity in the face of potential disaster, we recommend you include the starting time in the subject line of all your Outlook appointments between Mar 11 and April 1. That way, in case there is a problem, it can be manually corrected with less hassle.

We are working with Microsoft and will share more news with you as we receive it. If you have any questions, please call the Help Desk at x4544.

While the certificate was expired, Outlook desktop application users should have been unaffected; Eudora desktop application users may have been unable to check their mail and all clients accessing their mail via Outlook Web Access (OWA) should have received a message indicating the secure certificate was valid, but expired. Selecting "yes" to proceed allowed access as normal to the Exchange mailboxes. There was a brief time this morning while the expired certificate was removed and the new one installed that the OWA was also unavailable.

Please be aware that the certificate's expiration did not affect the actual security of the traffic to and from the e-mail server. An SSL certificate is similar to a bonding process in which an outside company verifies that we are actually the organization we purport to be. What expired was our contract with Verisign to verify our identity, not our actual security configuration.
11/22/2004 The administrative webserver argon will be restarted at approximately 1:20 p.m. to resolve an installation issue with a custom application.

7/26/2004 Mass Mailing Masquerading E-mail Worm

The Mydoom.o virus was released today. It sends out e-mail containing a fake warning that your computer may have a virus and may be sending out unsolicited mail. To fix this issue it asks you to open and run the instructions in the enclosed zip file. This message pretends to be from the truman.edu support staff, a ploy to increase its level of authenticity. This message did not originate from ITS, and you may safely delete it. ITS will never send out security updates as e-mail attachments. If you have any questions on e-mail that appears to be from ITS you may call the ITS Helpdesk at x4544. ITS is currently deploying an antivirus update that was just made available from our antivirus vendor. This update should enable our antivirus software to automatically remove mydoom.o infected messages.

As always, do not open attachments you are not expecting.

Specific information about this virus is available at the following web site:

5/5/2004 Some campus computers rebooted unexpectedly today at 3:00 PM. This was caused due to a temporary configuration change that had not yet been disabled. In order to help combat the spread of the SASSER worm, ITS had responded by configuring computers to install security updates at 3:00 PM (on Tuesday, May 4). This configuration change had not yet been disabled. Therefore, the computers that rebooted today were ones that had downloaded additional updates from Microsoft Windows Update. Since they had been configured to install Windows Automatic Updates at 3:00 PM, they rebooted when the installation was complete. Any users logged on should have received warnings (and a 5 minute countdown) before the reboot; however, some users have reported that a reboot occurred without any warning. ITS is changing Truman systems currently connected to the network so that this does not occur again.

MOREnet Security Advisory: SQL Slammer Worm

A new worm known as the SQL Slammer Worm was discovered on January 24, 2003. This worm targets servers running Microsoft SQL and causes a denial of service and loss of network availability.

In order to restore network availability, MOREnet has temporarily stopped routing all port 1434 udp traffic across the backbone. While this may cause some interruption of SQL use, many MOREnet networks were simply unavailable on the morning of Saturday, January 25, 2003 due to traffic from this worm. Normal routing will be restored as soon as the threat has abated.

Directly Affected Devices:

Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP running SQL

Indirectly Affected Devices:

Any Internet device or user attacked or abused from a compromised machine. Significant reports of loss of network availability (both inside and outside MOREnet) have come to MOREnet’s attention.

Also Known As:

W32.SQLExp.Worm, SQL Slammer Worm, DDOS.SQLP1434.A, W32/SQLSlammer
