LAN Upgrade Fiber Analysis

The purpose of this document is to analyze the proposed LAN upgrades in relation to the existing Truman State fiber infrastructure. For easy reference this document will follow the order of the Visio drawings Alan Baldwin created for the LAN upgrade. Small representations of the Visio drawings will also be embedded for easy reference.

Initially, it needs to be stated that we do not know if all fibers are in good working order. In fact, we do know that we have had some fiber failures in the past that have not been corrected or documented. This document will not address those issues since the full extent of those issues is still unknown. We have previously recommended that all the fiber be verified using an OTDR.

Drawing one covers Kirk Building, Kirk Memorial, Public Safety and the Student Recreation Center.

Kirk Building has six single mode and twelve multimode fibers from McClain. The WIC is located in the closet area.

Kirk Memorial has six single mode and twelve multimode fibers from McClain. The WIC is located one floor directly below the closet location. A long jumper will reach the WIC.

Public Safety is jumpered from the Student Recreation Center. There are twelve multimode fibers and no single mode. The drawings call for single mode fiber.

The Student Recreation Center has six single mode and twelve multimode fibers from McClain. However, twelve multimode is all that is available in the closet. The drawings call for single mode in the closet.

Drawing two shows Pickler Memorial Library.

Pickler Memorial Library has six single mode and twelve multimode from McClain. The WIC is located in the west side of the basement in a mechanical area. The first floor west closet has twelve multimode, but no single mode fiber from the WIC. The drawings call for single mode fiber for the uplink.

The second floor west closet has six multimode that come from the WIC. This will mean a jumper will have to be made at the WIC.

The third floor west closet has twelve multimode coming from the first floor west closet.

The second floor east closet has twelve multimode coming from the first floor east closet. This will mean a jumper will have to be made in the first floor east closet.

The first floor east has twelve multimode from the WIC. This will mean that two jumpers will be needed at the WIC for both first and second floor east closets.

Not shown in the drawings is the third floor east closet that has no fiber, but needs single mode for the NAS installation.

Pickler Memorial Library should be workable, except for the lack of single mode fiber in the first floor west and third floor east closets.

Drawing three covers Ophelia Parrish.

Ophelia Parrish has six single mode and twelve multimode fibers from McClain. The first floor south closet has six single mode and twelve multimode fibers from the WIC.

The basement north closet has six single mode and twelve multimode from the first south closet.

At present there is no single mode in either closet and the north closet is fed from the south closet.

The Student Union Building has six single mode and twelve multimode from McClain. The basement closet has no single mode and twelve multimode. The drawing shows single mode needed in the closet. Drawing six shows McClain Hall and the Child Development Center.

McClain Hall has twelve single mode and twenty-four multimode from Violette Hall. The Financial Aide closet has twelve multimode from the Data Center.

The Child Development Center has no working fiber. Six single mode and six multimode were run to the building jumpered from the Student Recreation Center, but do not work. The building is currently jumpered over copper from Public Safety. The drawing shows single mode fiber used.

Drawing seven shows Adair House Counseling Center and the Power Plant.

Adair House has six single mode and twelve multimode from Violette Hall. The WIC is at the closet.

The Counseling Center also has six single mode and twelve multimode from Violette Hall and the WIC is at the closet.

The Power Plant has six single mode and twelve multimode from Violette Hall, however, only two multimode are terminated. The drawing shows single mode used.

Drawing eight shows Barnett Hall, McKinney Center and Pershing Building.

The fiber to Barnett Hall from Violette Hall was damaged a couple years ago. An attempt to splice the fiber was made; however only two multimode fibers are know to be functional.

The south closet does have six single mode and twelve multimode to the WIC, but there is no single mode to the building. The drawing shows four strands of single mode needed.

The second floor east has six single mode and twelve multimode to the south closet.

The WIC is in the basement closet and there is six single and twelve multimode to the south closet.

Pershing Building has six single mode and twelve multimode from Violette Hall. The closet, however only has twelve multimode fibers and no single mode. The drawings show single mode used in the closet.

McKinney Center has six single mode and twelve multimode from Violette Hall. The WIC is located at the closet.

The south closet has six single mode and twelve multimode from the north closet.

The center closet has six single mode and twelve multimode from the north closet.

There is one switch on the drawing not labeled that is unclear where it goes.

An implementation as depicted in the drawing is not feasible as the fiber is distributed from the north closet and the drawing depicts it distributing from the south.

Drawing fifteen shows the LRE links.

This drawing is unclear as to where the LRE units will integrate into Violette Hall, but they will have to be in the south attic closet.
