The purpose of this narrative is to document the recommended changes that are needed to the wiring closets to facilitate the network renovations and upgrades planned for the summer of 2004.
There are two wiring closets in McClain Hall. The closet located in the Financial Aide office uses building air conditioning and has a Leibert UPS. The two concerns with this closet are the effectiveness of the building air conditioning and the use of 110 blocks instead of patch panels.
The second closet is located in the Data Center. The major concerns with this location are the use of 110 blocks and lack of cable management. This location is on the Data Center air conditioning and UPS.
Violette Hall has three closet locations, two in the attic area and one in the projection room off room 1000. The closet off VH1000 does need the UPS replaced. This closet is on building air conditioning, but does have 110 blocks.
The attic closets both utilize 110 blocks, have APC UPS and window type air conditioning. It is recommended that the a new larger UPS be implemented in each closet allowing for the continued deployment of the south closet as a back up data center and any needs that telephone services may have for emergency purposes. It is also recommended that both closets be connected to the building air conditioning as the window units have proven unreliable in the past and have been responsible for campus-wide outages. Additionally, Cable management must be addressed with the implementation of new equipment. Finally, for both security reasons and efficiency, the closet structures need to be insulated and an exterior wall constructed.

The Library has 7 closet locations. Closets are stacked on the east side on the first, second and third floors and on the west side in the basement, first, second and third floors. The basement closet is a wall mounted rack by the WIC and houses only the Accelar 1100 for the building and a monitor point. It is recommended that this closet location be abandoned and the electronics moved to the first floor west closet. This will necessitate running single mode fiber to the first floor west closet.

The first floor east closet has UPS support. The building has air, but the closet does not have any air handling. It is recommended that air handling sufficient to provide a positive air flow for the closet be established.

The first floor west closet has UPS support. The building has air, but the closet does not have any air handling. It is recommended that air handling sufficient to provide a positive air flow for the closet be established.

The second floor east closet does not have UPS support. The building has air, but the closet does not have any air handling. It is recommended that UPS support and air handling sufficient to provide a positive air flow for the closet be established.

Second floor west has UPS support. The building has air, but the closet does not have any air handling. It is recommended that air handling sufficient to provide a positive air flow for the closet be established.

Third floor east has a rack and nothing else. Horizontal wiring for the third floor east passes through this closet area and is terminated in the second floor east closet. This decision was made because the small number of third flood connections did not warrant establishing an additional closet. The space was later used to house the NAS but do to the heat buildup in the closet the NAS had to be moved. There is no UPS support in the closet. The building has air, but the closet does not have any air handling. It is recommended that UPS support and air handling sufficient to provide a positive air flow for the closet be established.

The third floor west closet has UPS support. The building has air, but the closet does not have any air handling. It is recommended that air handling sufficient to provide a positive air flow for the closet be established.

Ryle Hall has three closet locations. The closet located in the Women’s Resource Center is a cabinet that houses one switch. The room has air conditioning, but no UPS support. It is recommended that a small rack mounted UPS be installed and measured taken to insure the air conditioning is maintained when the room is vacant.
The fourth floor north closet is located just off the elevator. It has a window air conditioner and has had UPS support, but the APC UPS has failed before the air conditioning was installed. It is recommended that UPS support be reestablished.

The fifth floor south closet is located just off the elevator. It has a window air conditioner and has had UPS support, but the APC UPS has failed before the air conditioning was installed. It is recommended that UPS support be reestablished.

Centennial Hall has two closet locations.

Dobson Hall has three closet locations. The electronics for the lab are in a small cabinet in the lab. The air conditioning in the lab needs to be considered as if does not appear to be effective much of the time. A small UPS needs to be provided for the electronics in this location.
The primary building closets are located on the third and fourth floors. These two closets are very similar and have the same problem, heat. Some type of air conditioning and air handling is needed. The doors do have vents, but no air is circulating and both closets are always very hot. Both closets do have Leibert UPS support. The third floor closet is located in the main hall on the interior wall of the south east corner of the building.

The fourth floor closet is located in the main hall on the interior wall of the north east corner of the building.

Missouri Hall has two closet locations. The primary closet located on the third floor has UPS support. An air conditioner has been purchased for this location, but is not installed.

The fifth floor closet does have UPS support, but does not have air conditioning. This closet does not have a window and no vent in the door. It also serves as the access way to the attic. Air conditioning, or at minimal, some air handling is needed.

Brewer-Blanton-Nason has four locations that switches are installed. One switch is installed at the Blanton Hall desk and only operates a few machines. This location should be removed completely and the locations served by this switch wired to the Blanton wiring closet.
Brewer basement has a small cabinet with switches that run the Brewer annex, classroom and the offices located in the northwest section of the basement. This cabinet location needs some air handling and UPS support.
The major closets in Brewer-Blanton-Nason are located on the third floor at the north and south ends of the main hallway. Both closets need UPS support and air conditioning. There is a single window in each closet, but is only about a foot wide. There are no grates in the doors.

The student REC center has one closet located in a laundry room on the second floor. It has no UPS. The building has air conditioning, but there is a large commercial type dryer in the room. An evaluation needs to be made on whether is would be more cost effective to move the wiring closet or the laundry facility. There is a mechanical room that is close to the current location that would have space for a rack, UPS and environmental controls.

The Child Development Center has one closet located in a storage room. A permanent mount is needed for the electronics. There is no UPS support or environmental controls. Some type of air handling to use the buildings air conditioning, a small rack mount UPS and a wall mount rack would be recommended.

The UP has one closet. The building has air conditioning, but some air handling is needed. There are no grates in the door. There is no UPS support. UPS and a positive air flow system are recommended.

McKinney has one closet location on the west end of the building. The electronics are mounted in a wall mount rack hung above the door. The door is visible in the lower left of the picture below. The rest of the room is filled with steam pipes and mechanical equipment. A new closet location should be established with adequate space for a rack or cabinet, UPS support and environmental controls. There are storage rooms that would be suitable located close to the building center.
Public Safety has one closet location. A wall mount rack is attached to the basement wall. The building has air conditioning and there is adequate air flow around the electronics. There is a sink located close to the electronics, but the sink is not in use. Cable management and UPS support are needed.

The Physical Plant has one closet location with a small cabinet. UPS support is needed as is some form of positive airflow. The closet that housed the cabinet is also used for storage and it is a concern. Mop buckets, and paper product are often set on and around the cabinet. Alternative locations for the mop buckets would be highly desirable. The paper products being stored do need to allow for airflow around the electronics.

Kirk Building has one closet located on the southeast corner of the building. The closet has a wall mount rack located under a staircase. There is no air conditioning or UPS support. An air compressor is located directly below the rack. It is recommended that the air compressor be relocated. It is also recommended that UPS support and some form of positive airflow be established.

Kirk Memorial has one closet location. One switch is mounted to a backboard next to the 110 panel. There is no UPS support and no air conditioning. It is recommended that a small cabinet be installed with UPS support and a positive air flow established.

Ophelia Parrish has three closet locations. The main closet is in the south end of the building. This closet has UPS support and is on the building air conditioning.

The north closet is located in an old section of the basement. It has UPS support, but no air conditioning. It is recommended that a positive air flow be established for this location.

The East closet has building air conditioning and UPS support.

The only other recommendation for Ophelia Parrish is that keys be provided to allow access to the closets. IT Services has keys to the closet doors themselves, but not to the doors that must be passed through to get to the closets.
Barnett Hall has three closet locations. The south closet is located just off the lab/classroom in BT200. The building has air conditioning but the closet does not. The closet does not have UPS support. It is recommended that UPS support be provided and that air handling be established.

The second floor east closet is located in a janitorial space. The closet does not have air conditioning or UPS support. It is recommended that UPS support and air handling be established. It is further recommended that the janitorial staff not utilize the space for storage and allow access.
The basement closet is housed in a wire cage. It has no air conditioning or UPS support. It is recommended that UPS and air handling be established. It is also recommended that the closet area be enclosed for security and to prevent contamination.

Baldwin Hall has two closets. Both closets in Baldwin Hall are located in janitorial spaces that house the air handlers. The electronics are housed in wall mounted racks and a mix of patch panels and 110 blocks. The janitorial space is used for storage of cleaning supplies, paper products, even the time clock. The areas do have sufficient air conditioning. There is no UPS support. Because of the limited space, small rack mounted UPS support is recommended. It is also recommended that an agreement be reached with the janitorial staff to keep easy access to the equipment and to keep these areas as dry storage areas only. This would keep items such as mop and broom handles away from the wiring.

The second floor closet is located in the lounge area on the north end of the building. The lounge area does not have air conditioning or UPS support. It is recommended that air conditioning and UPS support be established.

The Student Union has two closet locations. Both are located in the basement. The North closet is a wire cage in the end of a janitorial space. Generally, the door to the janitorial space is open. The building has air conditioning. There is no UPS support in the closet. It is recommended that UPS support be established in the closet and air handling be address to adequately meet the needs of the electronics. For security reasons, it is also recommended that a drywall be installed to replace the wire wall at least to a height that prevents the equipment from being visible.

The other closet is just one switch running a few public ports in the arcade area. The room has air conditioning, but there is no UPS support. The doors to the cabinet are secured with a padlock style security cable. It is recommended that a pancake style fan be installed for air handling and some form of minimal UPS support for line conditioning be established. It is also recommended that a better locking mechanism be installed on the cabinet.

Adair House has one closet located in the basement. The closet has a wall mounted rack and 110 blocks. There is no UPS support or air conditioning. It is recommended that UPS support be established as well as air handling.
