Netbooks

If you need to be mobile, but still want a laptop for web browsing, communicating with your friends on Facebook, writing short papers, or chatting, a Netbook may be just what you need.

According to Wikipedia, A Netbook is a small portable laptop computer designed for wireless communication and access to the Internet.

Netbooks typically run either Windows XP or Linux operating systems rather than more resource-intensive operating systems like Windows Vista. The devices range in size from below 5 inches to over 13 inches, typically weigh 2 to 3 pounds and are often significantly cheaper than general purpose laptops.

So in other words, Netbooks are cheap, very light (you can carry them in your backpack), portable, cool (in terms of design and operating temperature) and they run Windows XP, Office and Firefox just as flawlessly as any other laptop.

As Truman is becoming a more mobile learning environment, Netbooks and other small hand-held devices are ideally suited for this kind of activity.

Sounds too good to be true… What’s the catch?

The current generation of netbooks uses a fairly slow processor and graphics engine, so if you want to play games, netbooks are not for you. If you want to watch hi-definition video (such as 1080HD blu-ray movies,) netbooks may not be for you, either.
